Doing My Taxes

I have always been one of those people who do their taxes as soon as the W2s come in the mail. It is easy and I get money back usually. Well it seems that a few years of honestly forgetting to report some of my income has caused the IRS to look a little more closely at my returns. This coupled with the fact I make just enough money that I do not qualify for most credits and simultaneously do not make enough money to get the really good breaks; I am basically screwed this year. I know it is the law and all that but I feel that I need some sort of incentive to file my taxes. They already have my money why should I have to file out a bunch of paperwork now?

Ooh, Spooky!

Saturday morning I got up early (for me) around 8:30 AM. We got none of the snow that was predicted for us. Louisville has some sort of snow protective bubble over it, causing even the largest of storms to go around it. I was so disappointed. I was all prepared to spend the weekend snuggled up in the house with the boys eating Cheetos, working jigsaw puzzles and watching CSI.

Anyway, my bedroom is a loft on the second floor. It is a long narrow room that is cold in the winter and hot in summer, but I really love the space. My second favorite part of the day is when I get out of bed into my chilly room and walk down the stairs. It is a weird sensation, the stairwell is cold until I reach the 5th step from the bottom and suddenly the temperature goes from 60 degrees to 80 degrees. (My favorite part of the day is when I come home from work and I read the note the dog sitter left about what the boys did while I was away.) This is what the stairwell looks like without and with lights.

Pasha will not go up these stairs, so after I come down I sit on the couch and talk to Pasha for a while about what he did while I was asleep. This morning while I was sitting there, I felt a cold gust of wind pass over me. The door upstairs was shut, all the windows closed, the heater was not blowing. I do not what it was but it was not scary. So a few minutes later I took this picture of Pasha and see the orb?

Locked Out

Last night, I was exhausted again and went to bed early. But the room I am using as a temporary bedroom is right next to bathroom and the sink occasionally drips. I have not figured out why it sometimes drips and other times it does not. Yes, I have tried the obvious. Anyway, so last night I decided to shut the bathroom door as opposed to my door, because Pasha likes to patrol the house. When I woke this morning and went to go pee, the door was locked. Uh, oh! I hurried the boys out side so they could pee and tried to get the door unlocked by shoving a knitting needle through the hole. No luck. So threw on some clothes and went to corner store to use their bathroom before I burst. It took me 45 minutes to get the damn door open. At least I had a phone so that I could call work and tell them I was late. However, when I finally got there, no one noticed that I was not there and the office manager had not listened to my message. This is a bad sign for my punctuality problem.

New House

I love my new house. It feels like a real home even with boxes and bins scattered everywhere. It has all this great wood work, the kitchen and bathroom needs to be updated, but they are so old that they are retro. It has a loft upstairs that I want to use as my bed room, but I could not fit my bed upstairs. As soon as I get settled, I am going to buy two twin beds and convert them into a king size bed. I have grand plans for the loft, think Ottoman Empire. Better yet, think ridiculous Victorian notions of the Ottoman Empire. I will try to restrain myself from making it into a bad painting, but I am really glad that I know how to sew. Pasha is afraid to go upstairs, but Truck is fearless and seems to like that windows are his height. I will have to re-enforce them. I like the neighborhood it is quiet, but there is park in the next block that I walk the boys in. Truck is very popular with the young men who play basketball there and always seems to find food dropped by picnickers. He does not seem to mind if said food is covered by ants.

The Dresser

About 4 years ago I bought a long dresser that I sat next to my bed. I used to use the top drawer as junk drawer where I stored pens, lotions, cookies, etc. One night in the middle of the night I leaned over to get something or the other and I thought I saw a bug. Thinking back on it, it did not move or anything, so I am not sure why I thought it was a bug. Anyway, I have not touched anything in the dresser since. I scooted into another room and forgot about it. Well now that I am moving I have to deal with the dresser. I am frightened. I will report back on this.

Question?

Can some explain to me how it was possible to build the Transcontinental Railroad (1777 miles) in 5 years without power tools and heavy machinery and why it will take 10 years to expand 2 miles of Westport road by 2 lanes?

Whore

Tom (my fictitious boyfriend) and I went to see Batman Begin this weekend and all I could think about when Katie Holmes was on screen was that she sold herself to that creepy Tom Cruise.

More proof Tom Cruise is not right: “Sex is great, if you are in a relationship. Otherwise, I find sex actually not so interesting. Without a relationship it is confusing.” No, Tom (Cruise) (I would not want to get him confused with my new boyfriend). Sex in a relationship is confusing. You have to be all concerned about the other person when you are in a relationship, or so I have heard.

Happy Birthday, Cyrano!

Now, you are old like me. I would say your gift is in the mail but that would be a lie. It is in the back of The Jetta with last year's gift that I never got around to sending. I will try to get those mailed out sometime before your next birthday, but I can't make any promises. Just because I am irresponsible does not mean I don't love you.

Monster Truck of Patriotism

I often find that I very uncomfortable with the way in which people use patriotism in relationship to daily life. I also have noticed that if one raise the questions of appropriateness of putting an American flag on a toilet seat, they are immediately branded as un-American or a supporter of terror. This weekend at the car show, the largest crowds were gathered around a monster truck painted with images of presidents, soldiers, fireman, flags, and Sept 11th. I was horrified, but people were buying posters of it and getting their picture taken in front of it. The thumbnails below open up large files, because this is the sort of thing that needs to be appreciated in high resolution. Am I the only person who finds this sort of thing offensive?
