Power of Suggestion

I rarely think about my safety. When I walk down the street I do not worry about being attacked. I don’t read the Snitch to see what crime is happening in my neighborhood. However, people in Louisville are obsessed with crime. I don’t think it a good obsession either, the people I know seem to use crime information to re-enforce their racial stereotypes.

I used to work late or come into work in the middle of night all the time when I worked at the Big H and I parked 3 blocks away. I was never was frightened at night. However, at the new company I was given a parking permit in the lot right next to the building, the other non-executive men have to park 2 blocks over. The CEO told me that he would prefer that I am not last one here for my safety and I could just work from home at night. When I leave after dark, one of the guys escorts me to my car. They are very nice and appreciate the gestures, but they have started to make me afraid and really don’t like that.

No reason to be afraid. The security guys do that at one of our other offices. It's a safety precaution for you AND the company. If you got attacked leaving work, your company and the parking garage management company can be held liable if they do not provide adequate lighting or security. You probably wouldn't sue them, but there are plenty of people who would.

I wish I could live in Louisville. I'm stuck in Manhattan.
